Ayuthaya\u2019s dynasty is in chaos because of a succession of assassinations and all hopes for the future rest in the young Prince Thian, who is concealed in a monastery and who has taken a monk\u2019s vows, leaving behind his beautiful wife Suriyothai.<\/p>\n<p>Somtow Sucharitkul\u2019s ballet-opera is a rich pageant of selected scenes from the history of that conflict, beginning with Prince Thian being acclaimed King of Ayuthaya and ending with Suriyothai\u2019s heroic sacrifice which saves her husband and her kingdom.<br \/>\nDesigned for a cast of dancers and singers and a large symphony orchestra combined with classical Thai instruments, this music-drama is a new stylistic fusion, inspired in equal parts by classical Thai dance drama, opera, ballet, and ancient Thai temple murals.
